Biography:

Dr. Somashekhar received his doctoral degree in 2004 from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Original contributions from his research work and those of the scholars he has supervised have been published in 84 referred journals, 158 conferences, 5 books, 5 book chapters, 8 granted Indian patents, and 178 invited technical talks. During the present assignment at IIT Madras and the earlier assignment, he has supervised 22 doctoral students, 6 MS (by research) students, and 59 M.Tech./DD student projects. He has coordinated 11 AICTE-sponsored FDPs for teachers of various engineering colleges in the country and 10 tailor-made continuing education programs for engineers of various industries and scientists. He has been handling many core and elective courses for UG/PG, namely Oil Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Microprocessors in Automation, Robotics, Mechatronic Systems, AI in Manufacturing, and Automation in Manufacturing. His academic standing has been recognized with several awards. His current research areas are mechatronic system design, system simulation and modeling, robotics, finite element modeling (basically fluid structure interactions), micromachining, advanced machining processes (basically hybrid processes), fluid power systems, and last but not least, additive manufacturing of bio-inspired structures. Currently, he is handling many consultancy and sponsored projects of various industries and R&D institutions of the Defense, Government of India.
